We are excited to announce that Sensei Bob Rhodes, 8th Dan will run a kata & bunkai course for us in place of our regular Wednesday evening training on 2 October 2024. Sensei Bob is a legendary karateka with over 50 years of experience. He has won numerous competition medals, is a referee, judge and renowned instructor and bunkai practitioner. So that students get the most out of this special occasion, we will merge the classes as below.
As Gichin Funakoshi (founder of Shotokan Karate) said: “Once a kata has been learned, it must be practised repeatedly until it can be applied in an emergency, for knowledge of just the sequence of a kata in karate is useless.” Bunkai — or application — is the means by which we start to make sense of the moves in kata.

- 5.30-7.00pm: Junior grades up to blue belt – junior kata and its bunkai
- 7.15-8.45pm: Senior grades (purple, brown & black belts) – senior kata & its bunkai
